Thomas Reid Hubbard

Mr. Thomas Reid Hubbard, "Pawtuck", 86, died Saturday, February 12, 2011, at Catawba Valley Medical Center. He was born in Mecklenburg County on August 27, 1924, to the late James Oscar Hubbard and Mary Louise Grier Hubbard. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Henry Grier Hubbard and Robert Clay Hubbard; and a sister, Louise H. Sills.

Thomas graduated from Huntersville High School in 1941 and served in the Army Air Corps. of the United States in WWII. He was in the 33rd Air Depot Group and was stationed in France and England during the war. Following the war, he attended and graduated from the University of South Carolina, Columbia, South Carolina, on June 2, 1952, with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. He began his career at Bell Telephone Laboratories and was transferred to Burlington, N.C. In 1974, he completed his Masters of Science in Business Administration at UNCG in Greensboro, N.C. He retired from the Bell System, now Alcatel-Lucent, in 1987.

During Thomas's years living in Elon, he was a founder and active member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Burlington, N.C. Upon moving to Conover, he was an active member of Concordia Lutheran Church.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Frankie Herman Hubbard; a son, Thomas G. Hubbard of Maiden, NC; and two daughters, Laura, and husband, Cliff Boyce of Raleigh, and Jill, and husband, Scott Touchberry of Raleigh, N.C; five grandchildren, Christina Hoft of Versailles, KY, Paige Boyce, Abby Boyce, Nathaniel Touchberry, and Christopher Touchberry of Raleigh; two brothers, Joseph Todd Hubbard and his wife, Margaret, of Harrisburg, NC, and Benjamin Franklin Hubbard of Concord, NC.

A funeral service will be held at Concordia Lutheran Church in Conover on Wednesday, February 16, 2011, at 11 a.m. Pastor A. Mark Schudde and Vicar Tom Roma will be officiating. Following the service, the family will travel to Elon, NC, where Thomas worked and raised his family. He will be buried in the Magnolia Cemetery in Elon at 3:30 p.m. The family will have an informal visitation at the home, 1515 Old Boxwood Circle, Conover, NC, on Tuesday, February 15, 2011.
