Alexander "Doc" Bomar
The funeral service for retired Detroit salt miner and former Henry Countian Alexander "Doc" Bomar of Southgate, Mich., was scheduled at 11 a.m. today at McEvoy Funeral Home.
Fred Shackelford, pastor of Springhill Baptist Church, was to officiate. Burial was to follow in Bevil Cemetery.
Great-nephews were named as pallbearers.
Visitation was Sunday and today.
Bomar, 98, died Saturday, Jan. 1, 2011, at the residence of his niece, Peggy Bennett, in Paris.
Born July 14, 1912, in Henry County, he was a son of John I. and Minnie Davis Bomar, both deceased.
His wife, Lucy Verleen Bevill Bomar, died Feb. 12, 2005.
Bomar was a World War II U.S. Army veteran. He moved to Michigan in November 1943 where he worked as a miner at the Detroit Salt Mine, before retiring in 1977. He was a member of Springhill Baptist Church, and according to a family member was an avid bird hunter and tomato grower.
He also leaves in-laws: Mary Jane (Earl) Shankle, Margaret Bevill and Bobby (Eve) Bevill, all of Paris; several other nieces and nephews; many extended family members; and several special friends he made while living in Southgate for 67 years.
He also was preceded in death by three sisters: Nell Bomar Jones, Lucille Bomar Bowden and Sue Bomar Moore; and three brothers: Tom, Malcolm and William Bomar.
Memorials may be made to the Springhill Baptist Church building fund.
