ROCK HILL — Robert Joseph Blumer, 81, of Rock Hill, died Sunday, February 11, 2007. Visitation is planned for Monday evening from 7:00-9:00 p.m. at First Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church (ARP), Rock Hill, SC. Memorial services are planned for Tuesday, February 13, at 10:30 a.m. at First ARP Church of Rock Hill with Dr. J. Barry Dagenhart conducting and Dr. Robert J. Blumer, Jr. assisting; and 4:00 p.m. at John Knox Presbyterian Church, Greenville, SC, with Dr. John Brearley conducting and Dr. Robert J. Blumer, Jr. assisting.
Dr. Blumer was the seventh of eight children born to Mr. and Mrs. Sherry J. Blumer of Lexington, Kentucky. Dr. Blumer began two years of military service in the Army Air Corp in 1943, stationed first in England with the Eighth Air Force as a tail gunner on a B-17 and later as an Army Air Corp Aviation Cadet where he trained as a fighter pilot.
He was a graduate of the University of Kentucky (‘48), and Union Theological Seminary, Richmond, VA, (‘51). Dr. Blumer served pastorates in Virginia, North and South Carolina, and was President of Thornwell Home for Children, Clinton, SC, from 1971-1978. Since retiring from active ministry in 1988, Dr. Blumer had served as interim pastor in 15 Presbyterian congregations in South Carolina.
Those surviving include his beloved wife of 55 years, Katherine Tanner Blumer of Rock Hill, five children: Robert J. Blumer, Jr. and wife, Patricia McCauley Blumer, of Flemingsburg, Kentucky; Sherry Anne B. Gettys and husband, Dr. Richard Gettys, of Greer, Frederick T. Blumer and wife, Elizabeth McClure Blumer, of Atlanta, Katherine “Kami” B. Thordahl and husband, Jeffrey N. Thordahl, of Columbia, and Philip Cole Blumer and wife, Susanne Scott Blumer. Dr. Blumer had 13 grandchildren: Robert J. Blumer, III and Hastings M. Blumer, Anne S. Gettys (deceased), Charlotte T. Gettys, Meredith M. Gettys, Jackson L. Gettys and Henry B. Gettys, Elizabeth L. Blumer and F. Tanner Blumer, Jr., Julia Evers Thordahl and Katherine N. Thordahl, C. Colin Blumer and Annaliese K. Blumer.

Mr. Poplin died Monday, July 3, 2006. He was a native of Bedford County. He was a member of the Eastside Church of Christ, where he served as an elder for many years. He was well remembered for his weekly article, "Scraps of Poplin," published in the Shelbyville Times Gazette, author of three nostalgia books and editor of the Bedford County Historical Society, a former board member of the Argie Cooper Library and the Bedford County Hospital. He retired in 1976 as the assistant postmaster for the Shelbyville Post Office after 34 years of service.
Survivors include his daughters, Beverly and husband, Esmon West of Lewisburg and Bettye and husband, Bobby Prosser of Dickson; second wife, Helen Jackson Poplin of Arlington, Texas; nine grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William A.J. Poplin and Sally "Sadie" Jordan Brown Poplin; first wife of 56 years, Sybil Russell Poplin; brothers, Glyde and Thomas Poplin; and sisters, Mattie Cortner and Mary Vance McQuaig.

Jack Raymond Hastings, 65, of Edmond, OK, passed away on Thursday, August 16, 2007, in Edmond. Born February 23, 1942 to Raymond R. and Pauline Hastings in Edmond. He was married for over 42 years to the love of his life, Frances. Jack retired from Tinker AFB in 1998 after 37 years. He was a supervisor in the cable shop.
He is preceded in death by his father; brother, James E. Hastings; maternal grandparents, John and Mae Kennedy; and paternal grandparents, Oscar and Maggie Hastings. Survivors include his wife of the home; daughter, Robin Johnson and her husband Ken of Edmond; sons, Raymond Hastings of Edmond and Ronald Hastings of OKC; mother, Pauline Hastings of Edmond; grandchildren, John Graeber, Jr. of Guthrie; Jared Moon and Jordan Brewer of Edmond; brothers, Elwyn Hastings and wife Cynthia of Moore and Charles Hastings and wife Linda of Guthrie. Larry died at the age of 82 on Friday, April 6, 2007 at home following an extended illness, surrounded by his loving family.He was the son of Fred and Lillian (White) Hastings. Larry was born in Mount Vernon on September 22, 1924. He attended Avon Grade School, then graduated from Mount Vernon High School in the class of 1942. He served his country during WWII with the 8th Air Force in England; flying in 30 missions over enemy territory. He was promoted Lead Navigator with the Rank of Captain. Larry and Henrietta "Nettie" Lloyd entered into marriage June of 1945. Following his military service, he owned the Avon Store; operating it for many years. Following his retirement from the Avon Store, he sold Real estate first with Johnson Realty (Elliott and Keith), then with Hill and Hill, then with Brown and McMillan in Burlington. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. Larry built two houses, the family home in Avon, and the vacation house at Clear Lake. Larry is survived by his loving wife and partner of over 62 years, Nettie at the family home; beloved daughter, Frances DuBose and her husband Dan of Kenmore; beloved sons Fred Hastings and his wife Shari of Burlington, Ron Hastings and his wife Janet of Ashford, Rick Hastings of Snohomish; 7 grandchildren, Amber DeJesus of Lynnwood, Larry Hastings of Baview (Mount Vernon), Abby Hastings of Bellingham and their mother Diana Vinci. Dave DuBose of Seattle, Lynne DuBose of Atlanta Georgia, Molly & Emily Hastings of Ashford, and a great-granddaughter Nettie M. Hastings of Bayview (Mount Vernon). He was a member of Faith Presbyterian Church, where he served as an Elder Emeritus, treasurer for many years at Calvary Presbyterian where he served as a Deacon and an Elder and was a member of Woodmen of the World. He was preceded in death by sisters, Sudie Bell Brown and Evelyn Thompson, and brothers, Thomas and Joseph Hastings. Mr. Hastings is survived by his wife of 67 years, Jessie Hager Hastings; daughter, Linda H. Lipe and husband, Rev. J. Paul Lipe, of Delhi, La.; son, Tony E. Dr. Carroll Brownlow Hastings (CB) Mar. 5, 1916 - Dec. 18, 2006 C. Brownlow Hastings, minister, teacher and Biblical scholar, died peacefully in Austin, Texas, on December 18, 2006. He was 90 years old. Dr. Hastings was born March 5, 1916, to Baptist minister, L.T. Hastings and his wife, Cora Brownlow Hastings. He began college at Mars Hill and graduated from Baylor University in 1937; the following year was spent in Tampa, Florida, where he was ordained in 1938 before entering Southwestern Seminary. In 1941, Hastings pastored First Baptist Church, Harrisburg, IL where he was met his wife Jeanette. Hastings completed his education with a doctorate in Greek studies from Southern Seminary and became pastor of Central Baptist Church, Marshall, Tex., in 1949. After 2 1/2 years, he took the call of Chaplain at Buckner's Children's Home and dean of Bible at Buckner Academy in Dallas, Texas. Hastings also helped establish and was the first director of the Baylor University Extension Division in Dallas. From 1960-1970, Hastings served as minister of education at Park Cities Baptist Church in Dallas where he founded the University of Christian Life. The next 11 years he held the position of liaison to Catholics in the (Southern) Baptist Home Mission Board's Interfaith Witness Department. In retirement, Hastings directed the Northwest Center in Portland, OR, for Golden Gate Seminary and served as adjunct professor of Missions at Southeastern Baptist Seminary and of Greek at Memphis Seminary. His books include Introducing Southern Baptists: Their Faith and Life (Paulist Press, 1981) and Harmony Among Christians: A Model Other Than Structural Union (Glad River Pub, 1982). He is held in loving memory by his children, John Hastings of Austin; Larry Hastings of Dallas; Nancy Hastings Sehested, Ashville, NC; Abigail Hastings of New York City; and Roger Hastings of Dallas. Shizue Kaneko Fukuda of Tokyo, Japan, is his daughter-by-heart. Also dear to him are daughters-in-law, Helen and Marilyn and son-in-law, Ken. Funeral service for Herman Lee Hastings Sr., 71, Hastings Road, Pierson, who died at home Sunday, Oct. 22, 2006, will be 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 26, at First Baptist Church of Astor, with the Rev. Howard Cox officiating. Burial will be in Purdom Cemetery. Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Allen-Summerhill Funeral Home, 126 E. New York Ave., DeLand. Mr. Hastings was born in Emporia, and was a lifetime resident. He was a commercial fisherman and a member of Moose Lodge in Astor Park. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and being outdoors. Survivors include his son, Herman (Heather) Hastings Jr., Pierson; three sisters, Frances McGuire, Pierson, Mabel Robinson, DeLand, and Thelma Fulks, Pierson; and grandchildren, Ashton Burney and Lindsey Hastings. Allen-Summerhill Funeral Home, DeLand, is in charge of arrangements.
